Check that your game meets the games minimum specs and that your graphic card drivers are up to date if they aren't please download the latest version for your graphics card here are the two most common makers of cards:
For ATI cards:
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
For NVIDIA cards
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
if your card is from another maker then please consult your card makers site for driver updates.
If they are then check the troubleshoot in either your manual or the site
