Just a thought for the game developers here at koei. What about a new Bandit kings, it was your (in my opinion) best game. To this day it remains challenging and fun to play, and as video game technology has advanced i believe it opens many doors for the this classic to be re-done and made better than ever. Any other fans of the original think this would be a good idea?

I love Bandit Kings and I still play it sometimes, even after almost 2 decades.

After playing all the available brothers and win in every possible way, I even reverse-engineer the SUIDATA files so that I can play Zhu Wu, Wang Lun, Cui Dao Cheng and any heroes I want!  Loads of fun! Grin

And you know the absolutely most cost effective (and fun) way to win a battle (and capture heroes)? Do the following:
  1) Move either your main guy or a sworn brother to an unoccupied prefecture adjacent to your enemy's (usually Gao Qiu's) prefecture with no gold, no men and the right amount of food.
  2) Give food to citizens or do service to gain support up to 35-39 (under 40 so you won't get a riot, but above 35 so your enemy will attack!). Make sure your food is close to 0 left.
  3) Your enemy attacks!
  4) You stay in the battle for a while so some of your enemy's food is consumed. When you have to, you flee. Note that they always bring food only enough for one month of battle for their men.
  5) Roughly 2 months later, you attack the prefecture with the right number of heros and men. Your enemy will not have enough food. The key is to have them not flee but chase after your army in the battle. They will then run out of food and lose. Then the game will randomly decide which of their heroes (or officials) you will capture! If they join you, their men will join you too, for free!!!
  6) This works best in prefectures with a lot of hills so the chase will be slow!

I loooooooove Bandit Kings.  My brother, dad and I used to play the hell out of that game when I was kid.  My fav char was Blue Faced Beast.  My brother would go with Hairy Priest and my dad, Leopard Headed.  We'd go with scenario 1, and each of us had our own section of the map to play with, and we'd see who could oust Gao Qiu first.  I actually am playing this right now with Leopard Headed in scenario 2 starting from prefecture 5 (which is difficult because everyone settles in that area of the map in scenario 2).

Wikipedia's article states there was a remake of Bandit Kings of Ancient China released on the Playstation.  Does anyone know if this is true?

I apologize if this is a repeat question - does anyone know if Bandit Kings is available somewhere for download, or if Koei has any considerations for re-release?  This was my all-time favorite game, and I just don't even bother with new games anymore because they aren't as interesting or challenging.

I tried to download at C:Dos Abandonware (http://www.koei.com/community/index.php?action=activate;u=13316;code=411b6f2696) but while the download appears to have been successful I cannot make the game run properly - the instructions don't match the files I received from the download.

I would love to have this to play over morning coffee while watching the news again...

thanks.

You need to use a DOS emulator such as DOSBox to get the PC version of the game running. Unfortunately, trying to work with DOS is not for the faint of heart, even for those like myself that grew up with it.

I would recommend getting your hands on the NES version. But we can't help you with that.

The romanized title is "Suikoden: Tenmei-no Chikai"

It looks like there may be a sequel as well on playstation titled "Suikoden Tendou 108 Sei

What are you talking about? It's the easiest thing in the world! You just need to bring the game icon over the dosbox icon (I believe you have to create a shortcut for dosbox. Then, you just need to paste it in the same folder as whatever game you're playing - thus you can make paste multiple shortcuts for your multiple games. And then, you just drag the game icon INTO the dosbox shortcut, and it works. I haven't done it in a long while, but I believe that's how it works. If not, then something along those lines).

I wouldn't bother trying the long way, where you have to input lines of code. That is the bad way of doing things. You need to drag the icon into the shortcut Wink

Yes, it can be done that simply. But in many cases, tweaking of the settings for the game profile is necessary to get the best game play. That is where DosBox (even with a front end) can be a headache to deal with.

So i was looking through some old boxes and came over this game again. Read a bit here and noticed someone said they had "reverse-enginered" some files to be able to add more playable good fellows to it. Anyone able to explain how to do so, or know any place i could get hold on them? Afterall its a brilliant game still, and since ive beat all the playable ones, id love to try some others  Smiley

I would also love to play some different good fellows. I imagine it'd involve some hex editing.

I'm assuming each character has their own hex code and you can replace a normal good fellow's code with a different character's code during the good fellow selections screen.

like some many of you i have played this game for decades.  my father and i played in the early 90's and i have not stopped!  i love hearing how we all came up with similar game tactics.  i always invite robed scholar to join me, he always has so many hero's with him.  not the strongest but they are great to divide up and send to empty prefectures.  i also always swear brotherhood with him its just the right thing to do.  i also like to make these guys brothers/sisters wily warrior, arrow of beauty, faceless, chief advisor, lion general, silver cloud & small whirlwind.  my favorite scenario's are the first and second.  if i do the first i like blue face beast, second is nine dragons.  i also wold love to see a newer verson of this game!!! all the best!
