If they give more info other than the controls, yes. I love a nice thick colored instruction booklet that gives info on the game and even characters.

I look at them occasionally. Most of KOEI's game's are exactly the same, and I don't need them (Especially the DW, SW, and WO games). I still like to have them in case I do get caught up in a game, but unless KOEI comes out with something completely different (like Bladestorm) I don't think the instruction manuals matter that much.

Instruction manuals are never as detailed as they should be, especially for complex strategy games.

Since the controls haven't had any significant change there really isn't any point in looking at the manuals except to look at the pics.

I always look at a manual for a strategy game, and the more info the better. I've noticed with some of the sports games I've been playing for years now, that they never explain any of the strategy aspects as their franchise modes get deeper or they create career modes. I've even bought strategy guides for some of them, only to find it didn't have the info either. I think thats just silly to leave your fans out there without any info on how to do something important. Don't gloss it over, tell me what is available for me to do.

i always read them, i'm the kind of gamer that's likes to sit down and know where he's going in a game...
koei manuals were always a treat for me, with so many pictures, colors, bios, the whole package...
and to my knowledge, they were able to cram everything about the game in rotk IX's (my current favorite) manual. not a single subject (or close to no) was left out. everything was in there. that makes for good bedtime and... er... bathroom... reading...

I only read the manuals if there is something not covered in the tutorial, or there's a subtlety of the game I need clarification on.
I think it's better to have a well thought out playable tutorial and on-line help.
This reflects my opinion and what most people I know as well: a good (
optional
) tutorial is generally important, and is usually easily repeatable. This allows the user to easily brush up on game mechanics even if the manual gets lost - I haven't lost any of mine, but I'll be honest and say I'll generally only read the manual after getting the game and before I play it the first time. After that the manual sits inside the box, untouched.
Electronic manuals/tutorials are also generally good for companies because it's less physical material to deal with, they cut costs and reduce waste impact (I think another poster called it "green effect"). Either one works for me.

I look at them from time to time. Mainly I like looking at the pictures but that's it really.

Instruction manuals.
Something new: "Right, let's get the basics down." I look first for controller layout, then the features advertised, then just look at stuff.
Something redone:"Okay, anything new?" I skim most koei game manuals for this reason.
Something stupid:"...Why do they advertise the game inside it's own instruction manual?" I keep reading despite these things, but feel time should be better spent on making the game box, or the game, more attractive.
Something common:"lemme check on that..." I always go back and read through manuals, so I like them to be clear and precise at a minimum, interesting is preferred.

I read through them fairly often, especially on RPG games.

I will sometimes read the intructions manual when I get bored or need info. Like when I needed to find out how to use suprise attacks on DW6E.

I only read the game manual if i'm bored, or theres something in the game that I need help on. Especially with ROTK, I usually need to find stuff out because it's not always obvious.

I usually never read them while I play unless there is something I don't understand. I will read them when I am bored though because they contain interesting facts and tips to help you through the game.
