Mori Terumoto would have been better off following his gut and joining Ieyasu. Instead, he chose poorly and paid for it.
First off, Ieyasu was the most powerful daimyo at this point, with Terumoto coming in second.
Second, Kikkawa Hiroie -an officer under Terumoto- was the reason the Mori didn't arrive in time. He was actually conspiring with Ieyasu, and was under the impression that Terumoto would go along with his plan and be rewarded for it.
As this demonstrates, Terumoto was hardly a wonderful leader (seemingly unable to decide who he wanted to side with cost him everything) and it's doubtful that the Mori would have been able to expand much further under his leadership...

I'm not a big liker of Ieyasu but I would join the Eastern Side because Ieyasu has governing experience.

East. The East had a good and strong army. Besides that, one guy is all it takes to win my vote. Tadakatsu Honda, nough' said/typed.

So? Look at Hidetada. NO leading experience what so ever. Yet he ammassed a large army, and almost defeated and killed Ieyasu.
He could of put his troops under that of Yukimura Sanada, or Kanetsugu Naoie, or any of those great commanders. With just him and his troops showing up, they could of changed the tide of battle.

Yukimura wasn't even at Sekigahara- he was holding up Ieyasu's son at the Sanada castle.

Was that not Yukimura's father? I have always read that it was Masayuki and not Yukimura keeping Ieyasu's son.

He helped his father, Masayuki, in the defense of Ueda Castle; this is actually where he really made a name for himself.

Even so. He had many other capable officers. If he would of showed up with his troops, they could of easily won, with troops alone. At the time, the Mori could easily draft the most troops in all of Japan. (Or somewhere close to the most)

Ahhh...but Ieyasu saw to it that the Mori were reduced to a largely bystander role.

I would like you join the Western Army. Ieyasu was too flamboyant in his show of power, and his policies cut Japan's contact with the rest of the world, which hurt it when the rest of the world was way more advanced than Japan. The West wasn't trying to take control as so much as stop Ieyasu, which I would appreciate. Not saying everyone in the West was honorable, look at what happened to Gracia Hosokawa for that proof, but they were halting Ieyasu's grab for domination.

My loyalty would be to whatever side the Uesugi was on.
I think West was it not.

The Uesugi switched. They started for the Western Faction, but latter turned to the east.
