If anything happened we won't know about it; we would be wiped out. Lets say the sun exploded; we and the Earth would be non-existent in nano seconds, yet if at that same spot the Earth once was it would still take light around 7 minutes to travel to that spot after the sun had exploded. Pretty brutal stuff like!
