PUK version?
«

Ok, I cant find the search function on this forum so I'm sure Im reposting a question. That said... Where can I download a puk version of the game. I know they didnt make one in english so then I would have to patch it. I looked online and the disc version was for sale for about 200 bucks. I thought that was a bit insane.
Any tricks to hiring someone? Zhang Fei has been free sitting in my territory for 50 turns and wont take the job. What a prick.

Talking about how to pirate the game is strictly prohibited in these forums, afaik, so no one here can really help you with that.
As to hiring someone, there are some factors to consider in hiring an officer. With Zhang Fei, he's got a few people that he hates (Cao Cao and Lu Bu). He won't serve them or at least it's extremely difficult to get him. Even with Liu Bei or Guan Yu, it's still hard to hire him.
About that, generally, sworn brothers and other relationships with your officers especially your ruler make it easier to hire an officer. Also, if Liu Bei has his own kingdom, it's nearly impossible to hire Zhang Fei. He'll be waiting for Liu Bei to fetch him.
Another thing, if an officer has people he hates, he also has people he likes. Zhang Fei likes Pang Tong, Lei Tong and Yan Yan among others.
The most effective trick I guess is to capture him in battle with an officer with Capture (Pan Zhang) then let the unit that captured him stay out on the field, not inside bases or cities. That will make sure he doesn't escape. Use camps to help reduce the cost of food. Many guys find that this trick messes the game too much though..

im very willing to purchase the game, not for 200 bucks though. i take it there is no where that i can buy the puk version and download it.
in my game im playing now im using a created character as my ruler. lui bei was beaten many many game years ago and zhang fei wondered over to my city and will not be recruited. same thing happened with lu bu my last game. wish there were more options like paying him 50000 and a couple items to get him to see reason.

They won't join you because their sworn sibling or spouse is working for someone else. So if either Liu Bei or Guan Yu is serving someone, Zhang Fei will refuse to work for anyone else and vice versa. Same with Lu Bu and Diao Chan.

In my experience, it's easy if you send Liu Bei or Guan Yu to do the actual hiring. When I got Liu Bei as Lu Bu he got both his brothers, one turn after the other, with no difficulty even though they both hate Lu Bu.
Also, YesAsia has the Chinese version for $90 US and with free shipping. Not cheap but way better than 200. The issue is that some people have had trouble with YesAsia. Still, it's by far the cheapest price I've seen.

Well, the standard route for getting hands on any obscure-ish game is little else than Wikipedia->Ask Google->DL/Torrent, so it's not like it's more difficult than trawling through amounts of info and shop pages to get a decently reliable purchase option without paying your pants and a bit more...besides, the speed and ease of obtaining it that way makes it one damnably attractive option.
As for the recruiting of people who are married and such; I feel it's pretty stupid to make it effectively impossible to recruit married couples and/or sworn brothers, even when you have them captured in the same city; besides, it's not like there weren't cases when those kinds of defections happened, either. Guan Yu surrendered to Cao Cao, for one, and I'd bet my hat on most defectors being married men, too. Where is our RTKXII? -_-

With that, I've now re-installed my PUK game to try out the new patch. Immediately, I ran into some heavy problems: seems like some part of the installer either just doesn't like ENG RTKXI being installed already, or that the old uninstall wasn't complete. Either way, when trying an install I got a heavy error preventing me from doing anything at all.
Thankfully, however, it turns out the CAB's weren't encrypted and could easily be accessed through 7zip. I extracted everything manually and put them in the same layout as the english version does, following with PUK installation in the same way.
Then came the next problem: Patching. How the hell to patch something when there's not even a registry entry to point out where it is?
Thankfully all I needed to do was again to copy entries from the eng version, and make a new san11 key with the appropriate registry entries for install location.
Patched and done, finally figured out the linkdata thing, and I have things up and running after what feels like a whole afternoon of work. EXCEPT.
Creating officers doesn't work.
The problem here seems to be a character problem: Generating chars by the "wizard" works perfectly fine, but as soon as you want to enter roman characters into the name fields it just says AW HELL NO at your face. And while it sort-of-kinda-semi-worked last time, this time I can't import my ENG officers either. The import option is there when I put them into my TPrsn folder, but it just won't find the files themselves.
So I ask of you people now: How am I supposed to fix this? It's clearly something to do with romaji/kana/kanji in the game interface, so maybe an outside hex edit is the only way? Ah, damnation, this confusing piece of work doesn't give me any rest at all. -_-
Another thing: does anyone have an idea of the workload involved to change a created ENG scenario into a PUK-compatible one? I'd kinda like to try out my Legacy with the powered-up AI for a trick. Ideas?

I have heard it's from having the english game, but there's a trick to get around it. Copy your english version somewhere else, then uninstall it. You can the install the PUK and also play the english version in its new home.
Edit:By which I mean into another folder on your computer.

Do you mean an official patch or Nikhil's new patch? If official, how do you get it?

I had this, and it can be worked around.
Firstly, you can use Van's Editor. Create the officers with the wizard to give an accepted name, than change ths stats and such to what you want, then use Saneditor to edit your Makedata and input an english name. However it gives you limited space with some letters taking up more.
Secondly, Hexedit the Makedata. You can input four characters for the surname, and four for the personal name.

There are, to the best of my knowledge, 2 official patches out for the reg/puk version of the game. Normally they are on the gamecity.ne.jp or whatever site which requires you to submit your cdkey or id or whatever for it to work, but I quietly suspect that site is semi-down in the vital portions of it seeing as whatever I tried refused to give me access to the files. I actually had to download a torrent of the entire puk+game+patches set to get hold of the patches; however, I am uploading them to my mediafire account as i type to have them shared to the rest of you without the hassle involved.
Update: Get the patches in my folder
here
.
I haven't got my hands on Van's editor, unfortunately - my hex skills, I am a bit more confident in. I will go by that.
And I was considering the first option to get around the install trick, but figured there wouldn't be too much hassle involved in mine, so there. Anyway, thanks - I figure this will be a useful thread for those who want answers to common problems with installing the puk game.

You can get Saneditor linked to here.

If I'm reading Gamecity right, the patch fixes that annoying bug where edited officers that haven't come of age at scenario start aren't adjusted. That alone makes the patch great. I wonder if it even works with Cao Shang's patch, though?

Thanks man.
And I see no reason why it shouldn't, so long as you work it in proper order. The patch might fix a few .msg things, but all data changes are done in the san11res.bin file, and the translation doesn't touch any of that. You may need to re-link the data using the link app, though, since your san11respuk.bin or whatever it's called is outdated.
in any case, happy gaming. I'm currently doing a 194 Lu Bu game on Hard mode, and it does live up to its name: I sent a troop to occupy Luo Yang, and while I was harassed by Yuan Shao on the way it eventually met its mark just before Pu Yang was surrounded by a coalition of Yuan/Cao forces. I left the city on an exodus toward Xiao Pei, since most of Liu Bei's troops was out waging war against Yuan Shu, and after some extremely heated duels between Zhang Liao and pretty much every enemy general on the field (including Cao Ren, Xiahou Dun, Xiahou En, Xiahou Yuan and other Wei bushwrap as i was escaping, and both Guan Yu and Zhang Fei during the siege) I finally managed to take Xiao Pei thanks to Gao Shun Siege + Chen Gong Bow A rank (i know they hate each other, but Cao Xing was busy already) combo and relentless hammering in general.
So now it's the end of 195 I have about 25k in Xiao Pei and most of my generals (just managed to catch the Brothers through Liu Bei) and 10k under Diao Chan and the defector Xu Huang and some in Luo Yang, while Xiao Pei is just coming under siege from Chen Gui (after Tao Qian who died) with a force of some 25k. Should be easy pie grabbing Xia Pi after I'm through sorting his riffraff of crappy officers out, but I'll have to gamble on being able to do that fast enough to avoid getting mashed by Cao/Yuan again (not to mention Yuan Shu in the south), as well as protecting Luo Yang should things come to their worst.
Kind of managing to go semi-historical though, what with the "wandering army" thing that took over Liu Bei and whatnot. -w-

It would appear the patches do
not
work together perfectly. The Cao Shang launcher just opens 1.0. The regular launchers don't work for me, for whatever reason I need the Cao Shang launcher to play at all (Edit: Okay,
putting the disc in
helped. Duh).
Fixed: Okay, you can get english names, dialogue--but not menus or some other stuff, with the 1.1 patch.
So just to warn boone_olmy and anyone else interesting in the PUK, keep in mind you may not be able to update the game and use the english menu together, though fortunately the game doesn't have too many glitches.
Edit: Gamecity is working again; I was able to get the patch no problem.

That is a hell of a reasonable price for the PUK. Wow. But then the headaches you two seem to be having setting up these extra files to make the game function more in English cause me to hesitate. And at the end of the day, that four character limit on names is still a major turn-off. Call me a purist.

Dear NejinOniwa,
Hi! I was perusing through the forums and saw you uploaded the patches for RTK XI. Many thanks. However, are these for the PUK or the regular version? There are 3 files on the patch.
Just finished downloading. But how do you apply the patch? All I get is some strange error message, when executing the patch.
Just wanted to ask you whether the patches are critical and what are the material changes, if any that you noticed? Improvement in AI? Other critical changes?
I'm running on the chinese RTK XI PUK with Cao Shang patch and Nikhil's update. Don't know whether the patches will mess up my install.
