The game press don't and never has hated koei games, if the game is good enough it will get a decent score: Crimson Sea games both getting 7.5 or so, same with Dynasty Tactics games, the early DW's, Gitaroo Man got in the high 8's, the three Kessen's got 7.5 type scores, Romance of the Three Kingdoms have tended to get good scores, Saiyuki: Journey West got decent scores way back in 2001, the early Samurai Warriors more recently. The original DW Empires didn't review badly I think?
If a series is getting bad scores across many sources then something is most likely wrong with the series.
As I understand it, there are other hack n' slash games, but they break the tediousness up and actually mix up the formula. Also various reviews take into account how between the many iterations of the Warriors formula, not much changes to innovate gameplay.
That is some of the reasons why reviewers give low scores. The image that Empires and XL are mostly there to gain more cash
DW3 got good reviews because it was a good game, it took a significant enough step from 2 to be worth getting, the gameplay was fun and fresh, the graphics were fairly good, the battles felt epic. Koei has had some good idea's for the series since (destiny mode, kingdom mode for DW4) but hasn't fixed the ageing graphics, allowed other games to surpass the gameplay of DW, by including so many characters the quality of story and characters has gone down when storyline standards are getting better elsewhere. DW stagnated and resorted to tricks while others kept improving so it gets poor scores. Rather depressing was that the first SW was fresh, had new idea's and gameplay that kept being entertaining and was everything DW once was and should have been.
Koei have done successful and constantly improving series, as have other companies, DW isn't one of them.
its really BS when reviews do that. Its hipocritical. Look at the madden series, and most sports series. Its the same thing- the same game re-released each year with a different year on it but with same gameplay as all the other ones, yet in the reviews they give those games high scores! Argh
Not really. I mean it helps that game reviewers for sports games tend to be the one that understand the rules and the subtleties of the game obviously. As a football/soccer fan, I play either Fifa or PES depending on which is better and there are significant difference in terms of gameplay and options (not always for the better, in which case scores go down), from the year before. Thought the same of NHL games when I used to play them and I don't even like hockey
DW does tweaks that can't hide the failings and failed to fix the system when it struggling. Kessen, DT and RTK got good scores because it renovated, because while the basics might remain the same, it kept things fresh and kept improving. They get high scores, as do sports games when the sports games keep improving
When the sport games stagnate, they got lower scores. Just like DW. Hardly hypocrisy to point out that a game is stale then praise a game that is an improvement on the year before
ok maybe some of ur opinions r right . but look , devil kings took 7.5 (good) rating while warriors orochi 2 took 4.5 (poor) . doesn't devil kings also has the same (warriors) gameplay ?! (I'm not saying that devil kings is not a good game , I have it and it's a great 1)
the standards of 2006 may not be the same as the standards of 2008, having played neither I can't comment any further then that
