I own SW2 Empires, which I have played quite a lot. I loved the strategic aspect of the game, and I have found that the transition between managing your "kingdom" and then the battles fitted very well. In fact, I even favoured the strategic aspect of the game, although minimalistic, more than the fighting part, which was too simplistic in terms of controlling your ary at my taste.

Anyway, went afterwards bying DW6 Empires, and to my dismay, the only few strategic elements I could play with in SW2 were simply stripped off, so I was left with a rather simple minded button mashing battle system. In fact, after comparing both DW6 and DW6 Empires, I though DW6 was BETTER than DW 6 Empires, since at least you would not be embarassed with such reduced options and planning before jumping to battles.

Now we have SW3 Empires, I have seen the gameplay trailers, only the fighting side of the game has been demonstrated, furthermore its on Wii , so I wonder, does anybody know if we have a Romance of the 3 Kingdoms like feeling of control on your provinces, or is it again like DW6 Empires, just a very very small flavor added to a rather simple fighting game ?

I am 28 years old, maybe I am getting too old to appreciate that kind of games after all.

I own a Wii as well and I am pondering wheter I should dedicate time to this game or simply skip it.

There is no strategic phase; it's not an Empires game. It's essentially just a button mashing frenzy like Dynasty Warriors 6.

I gotta say though: Samurai Warriors 3 was really a strategic game if you play it on at least Hard mode or higher. My favorite battle would be the Storymode of Kenshin - Chapter five - Confrontation at Shizugatake! An epic battle between Uesugi and Oda Nobunaga! Two great warlords fighting against eachother - really the best stage of the game in my opinion.
Chapter 4 was a great strategic battle too.
