You are Thersites!!, Achilles smashed your face in. Well, he wasn't really your friend, but a distant kinsman. Diomedes.

Okay, one hero in the legend ate "stuff and later died". Who was he? (the filling of his mouth with dung wasn't the reason he died, but it didn't help. LOL!) Hint, this took place not during the battle, but at a funeral.

Helenus!

That's right, but that's only half the question. What feature did he have that made him superior to Cassandra?

Okay Yue Fei! You finally got me stumped. I just can't remember. So let me have it! Smiley   Could it have been the fact that Cassandra seemed to never be listened to, while her brother got all the respect?

@ Yellow Turban: No one has been nasty and we are having a good time, so what is your problem?

We are not having a competition. We are asking questions and answering them.

When did these stories happen?
1) They burn their dead. Heroes get a funeral pyre and have 2 coins put over their eyes for the boatman.

2) The reason they attacked was because Paris committed a major crime in stealing Menelaus' gold, wife, and killing someone while being a guest in Menelaus' house.

3) The story started around 800 b.c. The war may have taken place in the 13th or 12th century. They did find ruins in Salamis that they believe belonged to Ajax the great. They believe the palace has been abandonded since the period of time just after the Trojan War which means if it was Ajax's palace then he really did die during the war.

Correct! Cassandra's prophecies were all true but nobody ever listened to her, while Helenus' prophecies were also always true, and people listened to him.

Being that the Trojan war is commonly believed to take place in the 11th Century BC, and the fact that the Greeks cremated their dead around this time, no it's not incorrect in regards to history. Though coins weren't placed on the eyes. Normally it was only one coin (an obolus or danake) and it was placed either in or on the mouth of the person.

It was caused because of the want to control the Bosphorus, which was the only water route between the Aegean and the Black Sea. Control of it brought great wealth.

And as I mentioned in my first paragraph, it would've taken place around the 11th century BC.

Ajax, my hints were vague. This hero fell down face first in a pile of dung. He spat some out. Later he dies in the Illiad. The former happens during time of a funeral. The latter happens I believe after one also. (that is why I said ate stuff and later died.)

New Hint -He was considered one of the great Argive Heroes.

@ Yue Fei: Super information! Thanks.

I've seen anywhere from the 14th-10th century. Historians  Roll Eyes

If the war really happened, I would be inclined to agree with what Yue Fei posted as the reason the war began. There is little chance that a huge war was started over 3 little things such as what started the war in the Iliad.

@ Ajax: Grin  Poor Ajax the Great. Seems no matter what he did, the gods just didn't give him any respect. I thought you'd figure it out. Props to you!  Wink

If I remember right Athene tripped him so he didn't win the foot race. He fell in a pile of goo face first, but still came up spitting and got second place. Poor guy felt so dissed he finally killed himself. Great hero, but man did he have problems. I can understand him, since I'm manic-depressive myself. Seemed the gods just didn't like him even though he was most likely the strongest and best warrior of the Argives second only to Achilles.
