The only game to freak me out was the original Resident Evil as I was pretty young hwne I played it and I played it at night w/ lights off so I will have a place in my heart for that game.

My experience is exactly the same. You turn the lights off after midnight, fire up the game, watch the intro movie and the first bit of in-game story, start walking around thinking, "Ok, this is an interesting mansion. I'll go through this door, down this long hallway for just a couple step--" CRASH!! Big zombie doberman pinscher trying to chomp at your throat. I've never jumped so high out of my sofa. I don't even get scared watching horror movies, but catching me off-guard at the very beginning of the game was extremely unexpected.

Since then, nothing else has really scared me.

I played resident evil in a pitch black basement by myself when i was like 6-7 years old and it still didn't scare me as much as SH3 when i was 18 LOL

Well I also mainly think of not necessarily but suspensefull/startling.  When I was that little i use the term scared cause of nightmares equals lasting effect.  Just jumping from startling I wouldn't qualify.  I was imagining that a creature would jump out from a window, lol.

I didn't lose sleep over Resident Evil, but after the dog crashing through the window, I was always worried about something popping out. Especially when I was low on health and/or ammo. I spent a lot of time walking around thinking "Ohhh... That room looks dangerous, I don't want to go in there... Crraaappp! Where's some ammo/health? Don't jump out from behind there... Make them go away! Run, run, RRUUUNNNN!"

I think that playing that game at night with the lights off didn't necessarily make it scarier, but made me more focused on the game, almost like I was in it. That added to the intensity.

Doom 3.  Man, i use to get so scared and actually flinched when i would look over to see down a hallway and then BAM!  One scary demon right in the screen.

Also, when i was younger, Silent Hill use to give me a good scare.

As one gets older I feel there is less scary things out there in terms of games.

The mind's imagination just sort of doesn't run as wild as it once did when one was a child.  I feel sorry for those who didn't have a scary momney from a game as the moment I feel actually brings a bit of nostalgia to your life.  The game will usually hold a certain place in one's heart.

Any game that get's your heart rate going higher is a great game.  And yes getting into the game, zoning out everything else but the game I think helps put one on the edge of their seat.  As well as playing said scary game alone Smiley

Does anybody still play like that in an attempt to get a rise out of your heart beat?

Silent Hill 4 is the best for a good scare, in my oppnion. Although sometimes it gets ridiculous, as some of the mosnters sound like veliceraptors. (Or what Jurassic Park makes them out to sound)

But yeah silent hill? usually always scary. Except the movie, it was just a bit gross - not so scary. The old Resident evil was creepy but it's more of an action game now.

Quote
I got farther in Resident Evil 4, and when it comes to scary, this is all I have to say:
Regenerators and Iron Maiden.

That's gotta be the scariest thing in that entire game. At the time it got so creepy that I just put the game down and stopped playing it, lol.

I have to say the scariest games I have played are Silent Hill 3 and F.E.A.R.  I also thought that The Darkness was kind of eerie.

When I first played Left 4 Dead, it was a little creepy, but not scary. After about ten minutes though, the creepyness was gone and it was nothing but zombie killing!

I played one of the Silent Hill games when I was little and it scared the crap out of me. Those games will give you nightmares if you are not ready for them.

Resident evil 4 scared me. The odds were way against you in that game. It seemed that it would never give you a break and it didn't. Good stressful fun.
